READING 26

  1. Read the headings in Mark 12:1-12.

  2. Highlight verses 10-11 of chapter 12.

  3. Read Mark 12:1-12.

  4. Consider the following questions.

The parable of the vineyard and the wicked tenants lends itself to allegory.  Match up the characters in the parable with whom they represent.

Owner of vineyard                  Jewish leaders

Tenants                            Prophets

Owner's slaves                      Jesus

Owner's beloved Son                  God

What impact did this parable have on the Jewish leaders? (12:12)  How does this parable answer their question about Jesus' authority in 11:28?

Psalm 118:22-23 is the passage quoted by Jesus in verses 10-11.  He refers to himself as the "stone" which was rejected but which has become the "cornerstone."  Read Ephesians 2:19-22 to see what implications it has for us that Jesus is the "cornerstone."

What kind of stone is Jesus like in your life?

  • millstone (the heavy weight which grinds things down)

  • cornerstone (the strategic stone holding everything up)

  • gravel (that paves your way in life)

  • diamond (beautiful and precious)

  • marble (decorative and functional)
