READING 32

  1. Read the headings in Mark 14:1-11.

  2. Find Bethany on the map of Palestine.

  3. Highlight verses 7-9 of chapter 14.

  4. Read Mark 14:1-11.

  5. Consider the following questions.

FYI: The cost of the ointment was more than 300 denarii.  Since a denarius was worth about a day's wages, it means the ointment was worth almost a year's salary!

What was the symbolism of the woman pouring ointment on Jesus' head?  Read 1 Samuel 10:1 and see what being anointed with oil means there. Also, compare Mark 14:8 and 16:1.

What are we to learn from Jesus' response defending the action of the woman? (14:6-9)

  • beauty is in the eye of the beholder

  • it's the thought that counts

  • you've got all the time in the world to help the poor

  • in order to understand others, you need to walk a mile in their shoes

  • you can never spend too much money on God

Let's say that someone wants to donate $25,000 to redecorate the church.  Is this an example of someone doing a "good service" (14:6) to Jesus?  Or is this money that would be better spent on the poor?

What "good service" would you like to do for Jesus?

Jesus said that every time the Gospel is proclaimed, this woman would be remembered. In what way do you remember her?

What effect do you think the events at Simon the Leper's house had on Judas' decision in verses 10-11?
