READING 27

  1. Read the headings in Mark 12:13-27.

  2. Highlight verses 17 and 25 of chapter 12.

  3. Read Mark 12:13-27.

  4. Consider the following questions.

"Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?" (12:14 ) This is both a political and a religious question.  What would have happened if Jesus had simply answered "Yes" or "No"?

How do you respond to Jesus' answer?  What things in your life are the "emperor's"?  What things in your life are God's?

FYI: The Sadducees quote Deuteronomy 25:5-6 to Jesus in verse 19.  It is a reference to what was known as "Levirate marriage" which was a way to try to prevent a family from dying out and to provide a means of support for a widow.

What do you think heaven will be like?
What does this story tell us about marriage and its relation to eternal life?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:35-50 if you want to see how Paul tried to describe what heavenly life would be like.
