For those who might want to do a word study on
"James" (the elder), his name occurs in the following texts.
- A fisherman called by Jesus (Mt 4:21; Mk 1:19; see also Lu
5:10)
- One of the twelve (Mt 10:2; Mk 3:17; Lu 6:14) (with his
brother called "sons of Thunder" in Mk 3:17)
- One of an inner circle to see and hear more than the
others:
- Healing Peter's mother-in-law (Mk 1:29)
- The Transfiguration of Jesus (Mt 17:1; Mk 9:2; Lu 9:28)
- Raising Jairus' daughter (Mk 5:37; Lu 8:51)
- Asking about the destruction of the temple (Mk 13:3)
- In the Garden of Gethsemane (Mk 14:33; see also Mt 26:37)
- With his brother ask for places of honor (Mk 10:35, 41;
compare Mt 20:20)
- With his brother want to call down destructive fire on
Samaria (Lu 9:54)
- His mother was at the crucifixion (Mt 27:56)
- Was killed by King Herod (Acts 12:2)
"James" does not occur in the Gospel of John, but
the phrase, "sons of Zebedee," occurs only in 21:2
